SA Derby 2026: Accidental Bid Heads $1M Morphettville Field

Ciaron Maher's import Accidental Bid heads the $3.00 market for the Group 1 SA Derby at Morphettville, with showers forecast and 2500m to settle it.

Racing | 1 May 2026

The Group 1 South Australian Derby anchors Derby Day at Morphettville on Saturday 2 May 2026. Three-year-olds at set weights, $1,000,000 in prizemoney, two and a half kilometres on a track that may well be heavy by the time the field jumps. Ciaron Maher's Northern Hemisphere import Accidental Bid heads the market at $3.00 as of 27 April, unbeaten in two Australian starts and already proven on heavy ground.

Form Analysis

Accidental Bid is a Phoenix of Spain colt unbeaten in two Australian starts. A maiden win first up, then the 7.75 length romp at 2000 metres at Pakenham last time out, crucially on a heavy track. That stamps him as a wet-ground horse and removes the obvious knock on a Northern Hemisphere import in May Adelaide. Ciaron Maher won this race with Explosive Jack in 2021. The jump from 2000 metres to 2500 metres at Group 1 level is still a genuine ask, but the form line, the wet-track tick and the trainer explain the $3.00 quote.

After Summer at $9.00 brings the strongest classic-staying form in the field, with back-to-back Group 1 placings in the Vinery Stud Stakes and the ATC Oaks plus a third in the VRC Oaks. Group 1 staying form is the rarest currency in autumn racing and worth a hard look at her quote.

Single Choice at $11.00 won the Listed Galilee Series Final at Caulfield over 2400 metres on 11 April, with Arabian Prince second and Amazake third in that same race. The Galilee Final has long been the Victorian pathway into this Derby, so all three of those graduates deserve respect.

Track and Conditions

Track and Conditions: Bureau of Meteorology forecast for Adelaide on Saturday is showers, a 90 per cent rain chance with one to ten millimetres possible, minimum 17 degrees and maximum 25. Morphettville is likely to be soft or heavy by Derby time. Over 2500 metres on rain-affected ground, that conditions read becomes the whole story. Stayers with proven heavy-ground form sit at the top of the read. Accidental Bid ticks that box already after Pakenham; everything else needs the form guide cross-checked once acceptances drop. Femminile won this race twelve months ago at $19, a reminder that double-figure quotes are not unusual when the going turns soft. Final field, jump time and jockey bookings were still pending at time of writing. Acceptances confirm Wednesday late morning.
The Take

Top pick: Single Choice $11.00 to win, off the Galilee Final form line that has produced previous Derby winners.

Value runner: After Summer $9.00 each-way for the strongest Group 1 staying credentials in the field.

Each-way play: Place value on Engine Of War $6.00 if the rain lands and the track turns heavy.
