Queensland Guineas Day Acceptances: Eagle Farm Kicks Off Stradbroke Season Saturday 2 May

Wednesday acceptances are out for Eagle Farm's Guineas Day. The Group 2 Queensland Guineas headlines a 1600m chase for three-year-olds heading toward the Queensland Derby, with the Group 2 Victory Stakes drawing the early Stradbroke Handicap types. Brisbane's winter carnival opens Saturday.

Acceptances are in and Eagle Farm gets the official nod as host of Queensland Guineas Day this Saturday 2 May, the formal kick-off of the 2026 Stradbroke Season. The Brisbane Racing Club opens proceedings with a Group 2 double on the card, the Queensland Guineas (1600m) for three-year-olds and the Victory Stakes (1200m) for the Stradbroke Handicap types still finding their feet for the carnival. Final fields and barriers were declared in Brisbane this Wednesday morning, with the early markets pointing to a competitive Guineas in particular.

Guineas the Lead-Up to the Derby

The Group 2 Queensland Guineas is worth $350,000 and serves as the obvious launching pad for runners chasing the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) on Stradbroke Day three weeks later. Kovalica was the last horse to complete the Guineas-Derby double back in 2023, before going on to a Group 1 Epsom Handicap second the following spring. The 2025 winner Depth Of Character (Annabel and Rob Archibald) franked the form by going on to feature in the winter, and the Archibald yard is once again the stable to watch on the day with multiple acceptors.

Connections coming north from Sydney's Championships will be looking at the Guineas for genuine prizemoney rather than another tilt at Group 1 company. The set-weights conditions and 1600m trip suit the typical autumn three-year-old who needs another run before stepping out to 2400m. Last year's race was won at $7 in front of a $3.40 favourite, a reminder that the Guineas often produces a price.

Victory Stakes and the Stradbroke Picture

The Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) is the lead-up everyone wants for the Stradbroke Handicap types. The 2025 Stradbroke went to War Machine at $3.20 favourite for Ben, Will and JD Hayes, with Yellow Brick second and Private Eye third, and the same trial pattern applies in 2026. Stradbroke nominations were taken in early May with 127 sprinters in the mix last year, and Wednesday's Victory Stakes acceptances will sharpen which of the autumn sprinters are genuine June contenders.

Down south, Caulfield and Randwick both produce metro cards on the same day. The Sydney meeting carries the deeper weight-for-age class on offer thanks to the Champagne Stakes meeting and a host of stakes lead-ups. Punters with a stayer interest will note the Doomben Cup futures market continues to firm around Half Yours at $2.30 for the Group 1 on 23 May, with She's A Hustler $5.00, Birdman $7.00 and Tom Kitten $7.00 the next layer in the betting at Picklebet.

Where the Markets Land

The Stradbroke Season is a value carnival for punters who pay attention to the lead-up form. Recent history says the favourite cops a few losses in the early Group 2s before the genuine Group 1 horses settle the markets in mid-May. Plenty of betting interest will be on the Queensland Guineas for the punters who want a 3YO with a Derby ticket, and the Victory Stakes for anyone with a Stradbroke ticket already in the multi. Race times for Saturday will firm late Wednesday afternoon AEST. Full Brisbane Racing Club Guineas Day details are available via Brisbane Racing Club.

Wagering markets across dabble, Ladbrokes and Neds will refresh by Friday morning. Final field positions, jockey lockings and any track downgrades will be confirmed Friday following the BRC's track inspection.
