BetStop Reaches 60,000 Registrations as ACMA Sanctions Six Operators

Australia's national self-exclusion register, BetStop, reached 59,830 total registrations by 31 March 2026, according to ACMA's Q3 FY2025-26 statistics. Of those, 37,247 people are actively self-excluded. The remaining 22,583 registrations represent periods that have been completed or cancelled early. BetStop launched on 21 August 2023, meaning the register has accumulated close to 60,000 registrations across roughly two and a half years of operation.

Quarterly registration inflows have been consistent: 4,541 in Q1 FY2025-26 (ending September 2025), 5,477 in Q2 (ending December 2025), and 4,971 in Q3 (ending March 2026). New South Wales accounts for the largest share of cumulative registrations at 18,601, followed by Victoria at 16,063, Queensland at 12,310, and Western Australia at 6,203.

Six Operators Sanctioned for Breaches

ACMA concluded investigations into six operators for BetStop compliance failures between January and February 2026. The breaches all occurred in 2024. Tabcorp paid an AU$112,680 penalty and entered a court-enforceable undertaking requiring a third-party review of its customer verification processes and staff training. Betfocus, LightningBet, and TempleBet each received remedial directions requiring independent audits and implementation of the auditors' recommendations. BetChamps received a formal warning. Enforcement action against Picklebet was still being finalised at the time of reporting. ACMA noted that Picklebet allowed a person to open a new account two minutes after being notified that the individual had self-excluded via BetStop.

ACMA member Carolyn Lidgerwood said that "self-exclusion only works if wagering providers follow the rules."

AML/CTF Changes Also in Effect

Anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing amendments took effect on 31 March 2026 for all gambling reporting entities. The customer due diligence exemption threshold for gambling was lowered from under $10,000 to under $5,000. Operators are now required to implement risk-based AML/CTF programs, conduct proliferation financing risk assessments, and maintain enhanced ongoing customer due diligence. AUSTRAC has warned non-compliant operators to expect civil penalty proceedings.

What This Means for Punters

BetStop is free to use and takes effect across all licensed Australian bookmakers within 24 hours of registration. To self-exclude, visit betstop.gov.au or call 1800 858 858. The ACMA enforcement actions confirm that the register has teeth: operators who allow self-excluded customers to bet face financial penalties and independent audits of their compliance systems.
