How to Bet on Tennis

Tennis Betting Year-Round

Tennis is one of the most popular betting sports globally because of its year-round calendar, extensive statistics, and individual nature. Unlike team sports, tennis outcomes depend on just one or two players, making form analysis more direct and predictable.

The professional tennis calendar runs from January (Australian Open) through November (ATP/WTA Finals), with tournaments every week. The four Grand Slams (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, US Open) are the biggest betting events, but ATP 250, 500, and Masters 1000 tournaments also generate deep markets.

Tennis Betting Markets

Match Winner: The simplest market. Pick which player wins the match. Tennis has no draws, every match produces a winner. Odds are influenced by rankings, head-to-head records, current form, and surface preferences.

Jeremy's Tip

Surface is everything in tennis betting. When the tour moves from hard courts to clay at the start of the European swing, you'll see players like Sinner and Ruud improve dramatically while hard-court specialists like Shelton struggle. I track each player's surface-specific win rate over the past 12 months. Anything below 55% on clay is a red flag for French Open betting.

Set Betting: Predict the exact set score (e.g., Player A wins 2-1 in a best-of-three match). Typical odds range from $2.50 to $8.00+. In Grand Slam men's matches (best of five sets), set betting becomes more complex with more possible outcomes.

Total Games: Over/Under on the total number of games played. A tight match between evenly ranked players might have a line of Over/Under 22.5 games in a best-of-three set match. This market rewards knowledge of playing styles, big servers produce shorter games, while baseline grinders produce longer rallies and more service breaks.

Handicap (Game Spread): One player is given a games handicap. For example, if Player A is -4.5 games, they need to win the match with a combined games margin of 5+ games (e.g., 6-3, 6-4 = +5 games margin). This market is useful when the match winner market offers little value on a heavy favourite.

First Set Winner: Predict who wins the first set. Some players are notoriously slow starters, creating value on the opponent in the first set even if they are expected to lose the match overall.

The Importance of Surface

Tennis is played on three main surfaces, each dramatically affecting the style of play:

Hard Court: The most common surface (Australian Open, US Open). Produces a medium-paced, consistent bounce. Favours all-round players. Most rankings points are earned on hard courts.

Clay: Slow surface with high bounce (French Open). Rallies are longer, and baseline players with heavy topspin dominate. Big servers are disadvantaged because the slow surface neutralises pace. Specialists like Rafael Nadal have historically dominated clay.

Grass: Fast surface with low bounce (Wimbledon). Favours serve-and-volley players and big servers. Points are shorter and upsets are more common because the surface is more variable. Grass court form is the most volatile of all surfaces.

Always check a player's surface-specific record before betting. A player ranked #20 overall might be top-10 on clay but outside the top-30 on grass. Use our odds converter to compare prices across bookmakers.

Key Statistics for Tennis Betting

First serve percentage: Players who land 65%+ of first serves win a higher proportion of service games, leading to shorter sets and fewer breaks of serve.

Jeremy's Tip

Set betting offers the best value in tennis for me. In ATP matches between a clear favourite and a mid-ranked opponent, the 2-0 correct score is often priced around $2.00-$2.50. When the favourite is dominant on that surface, the 2-0 hits more than 50% of the time. That's a consistently positive expected value play.

Break point conversion: A player who converts 45%+ of break points is dangerous against any opponent. This stat is more important than raw ranking in predicting tight matches.

Head-to-head record: Tennis head-to-heads are extremely reliable. If Player A has beaten Player B in 7 of their last 8 meetings, the stylistic matchup clearly favours Player A regardless of current ranking.

Responsible Gambling

Tennis runs year-round with matches available nearly every day. This constant availability can encourage overbetting. Set clear weekly limits and avoid betting on lower-tier tournaments (Challengers, ITF) where information is scarce and upsets are more common. For support, call 1800 858 858.
