How to Bet on Golf

Guide to golf betting markets including outright, matchups, and top-20 finishes.

How to Bet on Golf

Golf Betting: Outright and Beyond

Golf offers some of the highest-odds markets in sports betting. With fields of 120-156 players, outright winner odds can range from $6 for a strong favourite to $500+ for an outsider. This creates opportunities for patient bettors who understand course form, player statistics, and the specific demands of different tournaments.

The PGA Tour (October to August), European Tour/DP World Tour (January to November), and Australian PGA Tour provide year-round golf betting. Major championships (The Masters, US Open, The Open, PGA Championship) are the highest-profile events with the deepest markets.

Golf Betting Markets

Outright Winner: Pick the tournament winner. This is the signature golf market. Odds are typically $8 to $100+ even for the favourites because fields are large. An outright bet is high variance but high reward. Consider using each-way bets (see our each-way calculator) to get paid for a top-4 or top-5 finish.

Ryan's Tip

Golf outright betting is a long game. I never bet to win only. My standard play is each-way with top 8 terms. A $20 each-way bet on a $41.00 chance costs $40 total. If the player finishes top 8, the place portion pays around $10 x $20 = $200. You don't need the outright win to make money in golf. I aim for 2-3 each-way place returns per tournament.

Each-Way: An outright win bet plus a place bet (top 4, 5, or 8 depending on the operator and field size). If your player finishes in the places but does not win, you collect the place portion at 1/4 or 1/5 of the win odds. Each-way golf bets can return a profit even when your player does not win.

Top-5, Top-10, Top-20 Finish: A market with shorter odds than outright but a much higher hit rate. A player at $20 to win outright might be $3.50 for a top-10 finish. This market suits bettors who want more frequent returns with lower variance.

Head-to-Head Matchups: Two players are matched against each other, and you pick who has the better tournament result. If one player misses the cut and the other makes it, the player who made the cut wins regardless of final position. H2H matchups remove the field-size variability and focus on comparing just two players.

Round Betting: Pick the leader or best score after a specific round. First-round leader is a popular market. Some players are historically strong starters (low first-round scores) while others peak on the weekend.

Make/Miss the Cut: After 36 holes, the field is cut to approximately the top 65 players plus ties. You can bet on whether a player will make or miss the cut. Players who have missed the cut in recent tournaments at the same venue are strong candidates for "Miss Cut" bets.

Key Factors for Golf Analysis

Course form: Some golfers perform consistently well at specific courses. Course history over the last 3-5 years is one of the strongest predictive factors in golf. For example, players who consistently finish top-20 at Augusta National tend to repeat that performance year after year.

Strokes gained statistics: Modern golf analytics break performance into four categories: off the tee, approach play, around the green, and putting. Different courses demand different skill sets. A course with narrow fairways rewards accuracy off the tee, while a course with fast, undulating greens rewards elite putting.

Current form: Recent results (last 4-8 tournaments) indicate whether a player is trending up or down. A player who has made the last 6 cuts and finished top-25 three times is in solid form even if they have not won.

Responsible Gambling

Golf tournaments span four days, and it is easy to place additional bets after a slow start to chase a losing outright bet. Set your stakes before the tournament begins and resist the urge to increase during the event. For support, call 1800 858 858.

Ryan's Tip

Course form matters more than current form in golf. I keep a database of how players have performed at specific courses over the past 5 years. Some players just suit certain layouts. If a player has 3 top-10 finishes at Augusta but is in poor current form, the outright odds will be longer than they should be. That's where the value sits.
